– gélda, – niekõtė, a vessel carved out of wood, usually with ears at the ends. This is the description we found in the Lithuanian language dictionary. Geldas were usually 85-120 centimeters long, 35-50 centimeters wide, 12-29 centimeters high; smaller ones – 50-70 centimeters long, 22-35 centimeters wide, 7-17 centimeters high. Used for mixing bread, cake, marinating meat, ironing small laundry, washing children, sifting flour, grating potatoes, making flour dumplings. There used to be several geldings in one homestead. They were very widely used until the middle of the 20th century, then gelds were replaced by tin, cast iron, and plastic tubs.We really wanted to resurrect this ancient rakanda in a modern way. It is said that craftsman and woodcarver Gediminas Kairys knows the language of trees. In the forest, he listens to what the trees are saying and chooses which one to use for which product. From calm and durable trees – long-lasting geldings. We invite you to let this wooden tray into your home. Let’s be those ferrymen from the old to the new, let’s move from the once very simple country household to the unusual modern kitchen of today. Wooden trays are perfect for placing bread on the table, adding fruits and nuts, and organizing a cheese tasting. The aged version was not chosen by chance. This new image of geldels may be somewhat inspired by Japanese stylistics and will certainly suit Lithuanian minimalism, which is so popular in today’s city interiors.
